Binghamton has a historic city center with many buildings worth seeing, a history and science museum (Roberson Museum & Science Center) and a zoo.
background
The city is named after William Bingham (1752-1804), a philadelphian politician who earned himself in the region in 1792 as a land buyer and developer. Since 1802, the site, which was originally known as the "Chenango Point", has been populated by Europeans and was declared a Village in 1834 and a city in 1867.
Together with its suburbs Johnson City, Endwell, Endicott and Vestal, Binghamton is today the largest closed urban area of the Southern animal with nearly a quarter of a million inhabitants in the metropolitan area.

Binghamton has its own airport, the Greater Binghamton Airport (BGM), which is served by Detroit, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. The airport is located 10 miles north-west of the center of Binghamton, near East Maine. There is no public transport connection to the city, except for taxis and shuttle services. However, there are several car rental companies at the airport.

Freight trains are still on the move, passenger trains have not stopped since 1970. The closest Amtrak train station is in Syracuse, some 65 mi away.
By bus
Binghamton has a central 1bus station for buses and public transport. One of the things you can do with Greyhound is to go to New York City quickly and directly.
On the street
Binghamton is conveniently located at the interstate highway 81, 86 and 88. On the tourist route between New York City and the Niagara Falls, Binghamton marks the center of the route.
